Many streets in America promote placelessness and emphasize automobile use over pedestrian comfort. Great Streets are places where the pedestrian feels safe and enjoys heightened aesthetic qualities, while still allowing for adequate automobile circulation. These streets encourage walkability, social interaction and a diverse mix of activities and services.
A great street will often have cultural, historic significance to the area. Locals and visitors will typically feel a connection with these places because of the memories they develop there.
These streets are also vital to the identity of communities and are often a major catalyst for economic growth within the local economy. One of the distinct features of any great street is its character.
Most importantly, they are places where people want to be!
***For the sake of this site, particular emphasis is given to streets that employ a downtown/ main street feel. These streets may include neighborhood shops and/or a mixture of uses (think housing, retail, office and other services in one area), with a strong presence of retail.
Feel free to suggest other qualities of great streets, as there are likely many more!
Suggest great streets, in the great streets discussion post below, for the poll rating the top great streets of St. Louis, available in a month or two.

The focus of this site is to generate a poll of the great streets in St. Louis. To create this poll we need to start by collecting recommendations for great streets. Feel free to identify commercial/mixed-use streets that you like to frequent. Please make sure suggested areas are no longer than four blocks long. Also, it would be great if you could discuss the following as well…
Where are these streets located?
Whats the approximate size/length of the street? (could be in city blocks)
What makes them special to you?
What about the design of the entire streetscape allows this to be a great street?
Feel free to submit photos that support your claim. Please limit them to two a piece.
Looking forward to the responses.
